PRESENTING THE THAI, the little horse of Thailand

By Carlo Faillace

There exists, in Thailand, a native, indigenous breed, which has ancient origins and has well established morphological characteristics (as proven by a document which is part of the Royal Collection Library), that make it unique in its kind, although at the moment its breeding is not the result of an organized program.

The size of this horse leads to classify it in the category of the ponies. This, however, would not be correct, because a careful examination of its morphological characteristics shows that they are identical to those of larger horses and its grazing gaits are similar to those of the english thoroughbred.

Presently this little horse is used as a pack-h

orse, as a draught-horse and for riding. The spreading use of the motor, however, will eventually confine its destiny and activity to the field of the equestrian sports, where, thanks to its conformation, its temperament and its elegant gaits it could be very successful with young riders and in the riding schools.

The increasing number of riding clubs and especially of the Pony Clubs in the world and in Thailand itself could give to this breed a particular value. It must be, therefore, considered as a patrimony of Thailand which must be protected.
